About the Artist(s)

Acclaimed Toronto-based, Istanbul-born jazz vocalist, Fuat Tuaç just released his fittingly titled second album, The Immigrant, in June 2023, recorded with a band of top Canadian jazz musicians. Fuat sings in three languages — English, French, and his native Turkish, curating a potpourri of multilingual songs and jazz grooves that, like the artist, traverse the globe. The Immigrant is deeply personal, reflecting on Fuat’s perspectives and experiences immigrating to Toronto as a musician, including dating, adjusting to the weather, social issues, and finding ways to remain connected to his Turkish culture while evolving as a Canadian citizen.

“Immigration is a very big issue in the world now. People move around the world for one reason or another, even COVID didn’t slow it. My music allows me to share my story in Canada as a newcomer,” says Fuat. “I wanted to talk about my journey in Canada. I wanted to talk about my perceptions of the people I’ve met along the way, my experience in the jazz world, what I anticipated from Canada, and what I found. I wanted to have a dialogue about all of this and inspire audiences with this lens.”

“I’d like the songs on The Immigrant to speak to every person regardless of their country of origin,” Fuat says. “While the project is firmly rooted in jazz, and has been performed in top jazz clubs from Bremen to Montreal, Toronto to Istanbul, the eclectic nature of the chosen songs and subject matter offer a wide appeal to audiences.”
